WRC Safari Rally 2022, the biggest edition yet!

The 2022 edition of WRC Safari Rally Kenya took place on 23rd-26th June 2022

Kenyans and fans of the World Rally Championships around the world were unable to contain their joy. As a result, Naivasha #Vasha trended for the majority of the weekend. The majority of the local hospitality industry was jam-packed to the gills as hotels recorded an unprecedented sellout of guests who had made reservations to see the event, so business was flourishing.

It was everything, truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience! Out of all the competitors, the Finnish team Kalle Rovenpera, navigated by Jonne Halttunen, the British duo Elfyn Evans and Scott Martin, and the Japanese team Takatomoto Katsuta and Aaron Johnston, all driving Toyota Yaris-Gazoos, came out on top, taking first, second, and third place, respectively, for the Championship in Naivasha, Kenya. The French team of Sabastien Ogier and Benjamin Veillas was fourth.

Kenyan rally driver, 27-year-old Maxine Wahome with over 10 years of experience in motorsport, became the first woman in over 28 years to win a class at a World Rally Championship. She won the WRC3 title on home territory at the Safari Rally Kenya by 25 minutes and 27 seconds over second-place colleague Jeremy Wahome. This landed her an envious social media moment when seven-time world champion Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton posted a photo of her on his Instagram Stories.

The event's sponsors and partners included the Government of Kenya through Kenya Tourism Board, KCB Bank, Kenya Airways Plc (KQ), Toyota by CFAO Motors Kenya and Kenya Motorsports Federation (KMSF). Other companies such as Betika, Safaricom and Quickmart also sponsored top Kenyan rally teams eligible for the FIA Rally Star championship by putting significant funds into the historic racing event.

The FIA World Rally Championship is one of the oldest and leading motorsport competitions in the world. It unifies and fascinates people around the globe, representing motorsport passion and technological innovation. WRC is a highly emotional and effective communication platform, reaching more than 4 million on-site fans per season and over 1 billion people through various channels including as TV, social and digital media, and traditional media outlets.
